Muzzammil Hassan, founder of Bridges TV, a project to promote a positive image of Islam, cut off his wife's head in their place of business.
This happened two years ago in Western New York state. In the United States of America. He was convicted this past Monday.
This item should be given an award for Most Ironic Story to Get No Press Coverage. The newspapers that did cover it at the time danced around the whole "Islam and cutting heads off" thing. Mark Steyn gave us this newspaper clipping in his insightful treatment of this case:

You're in a bad mood, you lose it and accidentally chop her head off. It could happen to anybody, nothing newsworthy! Nothing to see here, move along...
I fail to understand why Hassan was convicted on 2nd degree murder charges instead of 1st degree murder charges.

Still, the irony did not escape me either.
Always, second degree murder is tool that Prosecutors use to up their conviction rates. As such, Prosecution will often offer a guaranteed lesser sentence for a guaranteed conviction.

By the way, soft-soaping what is actually happening in this country could be the reason why there is a dramatic up-surge in “honor killings.” In America, victims have no rights —otherwise his punishment would be the removal of his head at a public execution.

ReplyDeleteAs to the finding of 2nd degree murder I am sure that it being a jury's or judges' decision it is a way of placating both sides; islamofacists who find nothing wrong here and on the fence Americans who see justice served.
Not knowing all the facts of the proceedings my guess is the prosecution was doing the same in only offering 2nd degree murder.

Oh c'mon. You guys are getting ridicuous! The guy lost it and murdered his wife. Religion had nothing whatsoever to do with it. The man was known to be not very religious, and had a long history of domestic violence. Jesus. Give it a rest. This kind of stuff happens all the time, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, they all do it. Screwballs come in every religious flavor.

Yes, I was reading just the other day how Christian men routinely cut off the heads of their wives, stone their daughters, and castrate their sons in order to assert their time-honored authority as a dad. But I disagree with Jersey on this one point: his behavior was very religious —in fact, ultraorthodox.

Religion is one of the most important factors of culture; religious foundation determines how we identify with others in our group; it explains common attitudes, values, and behaviors. If a male child is taught through religious instruction that a woman is less than a man, has limited rights, and is always subject to the demands of the male species, then of course we can expect a grown man to behave in exactly that culturally acceptable manner.

Now, being a person who studies forensics, criminal behavior, and criminology, their are many motives behind murder. We might ask, which religion sets the consistent model for beheadings? Oh yes, that would Islam...
As for the news glossing over the story, sadly, they do whatever they can to protect the religion of Islam... We are supposed to be tolerant of any and all behavior from moslems because, well they are just so misunderstood. It is terribly disgusting.

5:55 p.m. — Aasiya enters the Bridges TV studio and is killed.
He stabs her 40 times and beheads her with a machete.
I still think he was one f*cked up human being but there is no denying it was premeditated unless the machete was a studio prop.
Further, she went to the studio under the belief he was not there. He attacked her when she walked in the door.
