It Might be Mitt
Face it fellow Right Blogistanis. Mitt Romney could be the GOP nominee, making him our only hope for making Barack Obama a one term president.
Chris Christie?
No way. True Believers on the right would be screaming "RINO!" within hours of his announcement. He's a tax raiser, expenditure increaser, cap and trader, and he has refused to join other states in the Obamacare lawsuit. And if you dislike Rick Perry's take on illegal immigration, you will absolutely hate Christie's.
Rick Perry: The GOP's Lyndon Johnson
Rick Perry raises more questions than answers, and he's giving being plain-spoken a bad name, coming off as dismissive, insulting and vulgar rather than folksy and honest. He's the GOP's own Lyndon Johnson.
I love Ron Paul's constitutionalism, but his foreign policy is naive. The good doctor takes a good thing, nonintervention, and turns it into a bedrock absolute, refusing to pull the trigger on a sworn enemy such as Bin Laden unless it is a completely righteous shoot. When two libertarian foreign policy tablets would do, Dr. Paul makes us take the whole bottle.
Congratulations to Herman Cain!
I am heartened at Herman Cain's Florida straw poll victory. Anything that disrupts the press's dictation. I would like to see him and Rick Santorum (an intelligent and articulate man whose expertise runs far beyond social issues) crack the top tier.
Meanwhile, Romney presses on. The man is like a battleship that won't go down. He's been campaigning for almost four years now and it shows. If he were any more polished we'd need welder's goggles to look at him.
Here's some "out of the box" thinking. Please stick with me. I welcome return fire...
While I encourage my fellow conservatives to continue discussing and debating the merits of the various candidates, I also ask everyone to contemplate a Romney nomination win. We could do worse. He's an experienced businessman who understands economics and knows how the world works, and he's run a state, so he knows how to lead and make decisions. He's a clean-living family man with no scandals in his past.
His flip-flopping could actually end up as an advantage (Stick with me!)
He's malleable. Yes, I could see him jumping in with Democrats if they ran the house and senate, but the odds of that are very unlikely. It's looking ugly for the dems in 2012; the GOP should hold the house and gain control of the senate. Given a torch and pitchfork tea party mob and some stand-up small government types in a GOP-controlled house and senate, I could see Romney affably presiding over a party of mad slashers. His job would be to put a friendly, responsible face on the gang that dismantles progressivism.
What If...
Think about what you would do if your favored candidate lost the nomination. Think what you would do if he or she lost it to your least favorite candidate. You're thinkin' third-party, right?
Now, imagine a victorious Obama smiling and waving on the evening of November 6th, 2012. Imagine him thanking the American people for affirming his socialist agenda by giving him four more years to finish off America as we know it.
Who am I for? Anybody. But. Obama.
Instead of me expressing who I like, I'll express who doesn't have my support and why from the GOP candidates.
ReplyDeleteRomney- his responses in the last debate to some of the question sealed it.
Perry- He's an O'perry on immigration.
Paul- Dangerous, and as you say, Silver, naive on foreign policy and founding fathers principle and intentions for our nations on foreign affairs and policy.
Johnson- Just for being a Johnson. :)
The Florida straw poll is a few thousand people who pay for the privilege. It means nothing.
ReplyDeleteIt's either Romney or Obama. Pick.
I've been saying for some time now that Romney is probably the best bet for the Republican party, for many of the reasons that you've mentioned, Silver.
ReplyDeleteHerman Cain is a bigotted fool who has no business being anywhere near elected office.
Jack: I don't think Cain is bigoted. His downfall is he is not a politician, so he hasn't learned how to homogenize his speech.
ReplyDelete@Ducky: It's either Romney or Obama. Pick.
I'm afraid you're probably right.
What Ron Paul is failing to articulate in what is seen as naive on foreign policy is this:
ReplyDelete1) Only the congress can declare war. War was not declared after 9-11. Why? War has not been declared since WW2 and that was the last time we won.
2) He is widely criticized for not standing in Israel's corner. No one has yet mentioned that we do not have a mutual defense treaty with Israel. Why? We have one with S. Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan. All we need is a mutual defense treaty with Israel & he'd be on board because, under the constitution, it would be required.
So I see Ron Paul catching spears due to failure on the part of himself and many others to lay out the legal reasons for his positions. Perhaps if the debate moderators would stop fixation on the "two..."
I think you are being too hard on Christie. Sure there are things about him to dislike. But he is straight shooter. I personally find the whole he didn't join the obamacare lawsuit silly. How many join isn't going to change the outcome. In theory it will be decided on law. I know it doesn't quite always work that way in reality, but him not spending NJ's taxpayers money on something that will make no difference to the outcome to me is a fiscally smart thing to do. They only question is will he sign a repeal? If yes, than I could care less if he joined the lawsuit.
ReplyDeleteSilver, if you come by my place today, you see why I think we must not support Mitt Romney or anyone similar.
ReplyDeleteSomeone picked up a response that Romney makes regarding Obamacare. That being, he will give a waiver to the States the right to Opt out. That is all he said in the debate if my source is right. Lets keep an eye on this one.Repeal is the correct answer. Anyway, I am sick to death of all of this waiver thing anyway. It ought to be brought up through the courts and ruled illegal.
ReplyDeleteRomney's looking like the only viable candidate you have, especially after Pawlenty bowed out.
ReplyDeleteIt's ironic, too. The only viable guy you guys have is not a conservative purest by any stretch. Makes ya' wonder, huh?
JMJ
Paul said. “I see that motivation is occupation and those who hate us and would like to kill us, they are motivated by our invasion of their land, the support of their dictators that they hate.”
ReplyDeleteRegarding 9/11, Paul said that attacks against the U.S. from Middle Eastern groups at home and abroad can be traced to the foreign presence of U.S. troops, as well as America’s relationships with dictator regimes.
In other words... he is a nutcase.
This is only one reason why I hope that he’ll never be president.
Sorry... I will NEVER vote for Romney. If HE is the only choice the Republicans have to offer, I don't care who wins the presidency. And if Obama wins, it wasn't MY fault, it was the RNCs. For as the pundits have stated, the office is the RNC's to lose.
ReplyDeleteRomney is the "establishment" pick. Just as George W. Bush was the "establishment" pick in 2000.
ReplyDeleteNEVER AGAIN!
The only problem I would have with Romney is if we would have a (D) House and Senate. Not happening. Conservative gains in the House and an (R) Senate will keep him on the rails. It will require steadfast Congressional leadership, always a question mark.
ReplyDeleteSorry... I will NEVER vote for Romney.
ReplyDeleteI will, for one reason only. Pres-uh-dent Rubber Training Pants must go.
If Romney gets the nomination, the Republican Party should disband immediately after the election. Win or lose.
ReplyDeleteI'd still vote against Obama, but I'd never support the GOP again.
@ Shane Atwell,,,
ReplyDeleteThats what I said when McCain got the nod last time around.
The last time in my memory the GOP did not shoot itself in the foot was with Ronald Reagan.
The GOP establishment or RNC are RINO's and do not wish to really win, if they do fine, but really they do not care so long as money keeps rolling in just the same as the DNC.
I hope Cain can break into the top tier. But if he can't and it is Romney, I will go with him though I do have concerns with him. But those concerns pale in comparison to the concerns I have with Obama.
ReplyDeleteAne we cannot put all our political eggs in the presidential basket. There is more to defeat at the polls than just Obama, although that is important. Holding the House and gaining in the Senate are vital. If have an R president and D congress, there is little he can do and it will be further impossible to pare down the entrenched bloated bureaucracy and get the Soros funded operatives out of Washington.
Romney may be a half a loaf of bread, but Obama is just the crumbs, if even that.
Face it. The GOP has no one. Mitt's resume is filled with destroying companies and sending jobs overseas. Just what we need, lol!
ReplyDeleteSeems to me the white middle class is scared shitless, knows the ship is going down slow and wants to shoot more holes in the hull.
ReplyDeleteBut Herman Cain has business experience. An executive from McDonald's is brought in to turn around Burger King and Herman follows orders. Why aren't you guys looking to nominate the guy who constructed the turn around rather than a flunky?
Then Herman takes Godfather's Pizza and turns it into a non player in one of the few growth industries we have along with prisons in this country and you sing his praise.
How about a L'il Ricky Retardo/Herman Cain ticket? That will scare Obama shitless, right?
Speedy; not YOU! Well, we'll have someone to blame for the downfall of the country; Conservatives too pure to vote for McCain sure 'showed the other Conservatives', huh? And the country? wow.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand ANY of the candidates, if you want to know the truth; OH, sure, there are little things I like and dislike about them all, but none of them stands out as anybody I'd vote for if it weren't for Obama.
As I say at my blog, and I hate to but have to: I'd vote for Jack the Republican Ripper today. ANYBODY but Obama...or anybody remotely like him.
SF, you're right about Romney, sadly (I say 'sadly' because my gut tells me this country could elect a really, strong, true Conservative if anybody had the guts to exhibit that... The GOP won't allow that, in my opinion)...
I can't STAND the slickness of Romney but there are a lot of good things about him. Perry's totally turned me OFF and I think I'm not alone.....Cain did a very good job the other night, as much as I could watch, so I was happy he got some kudos. (how's he a 'bigotted fool'...the mosque thing? What else??)
anybody but obama. period. We just all have to vote or kiss off the country.
Sorry Z, but I can take anybody but Romney and Huntsman. Romney is the "establishment GOP" pick, and Huntsman is the "establishment DNC" pick. Give me somebody, ANYBODY but them. Perry, Bachmann, Newt, Cain, no problemo... I'd vote for them in a heartbeat. But not another "Bob Dole" establishment idiot pick. I did the McCain nose-hold LAST election, and I'm SICK of the W. clan (who I NEVER voted FOR)
ReplyDeleteI want someone who FIGHTS, not another go-along-to-get-along.
ReplyDeleteYou want a safe, cocktail party Republican, fine. Vote for Romney and/or Huntsman and let David Brooks "rave" about the merits of Boboland... because THAT is what they REALLY think of the go-along Republicans when they're not flattering them for contributions.
ReplyDeleteI have mentioned with a few people and on other websites, and I'll say it here: there are three candidates seeking the Republican nomination I wouldn't support under any circumstances; Mitt Romney is one of them.
ReplyDeleteRomney comes across to me as someone who sees government as the solution to our problems. During one of the debates, I was bothered by a comment of his in which he mentioned replacing ObamaCare with state programs. If he wins the nomination, he will appear as more of an Obama-lite, I fear, which would mean four more years of Obama.
Even if say Romney won, it would still be bad for America because ultimately under a Romney administration, I believe only band-aid solutions will be carried out; the situation we face will still be grave, and should he run for re-election in 2016, unless the Libertarians have the chance to actually win a Presidential election, I fear a Democrat will claim to save us and wind up throwing us into the abyss, starting in January of 2017.
Anybody But Bush didn't work out too well (just like Anybody But Clinton didn't), and I believe Anybody But Obama will not. It is imperative we find the right candidate, and not settle for someone we think could be elected.
The only merit George W. Bush (the candidate) had in 2000 was that everyone in the "Republican establsihment" said he could win. He did, but THEN he completely destroyed the Republican brand. The party of small government that balanced the budget in '94 became the "compassionate" government of out-of-control governmental largess that gave the Democrats a blank checkbook to spend on ACORN, "community organizing", and "social justice" Pigford lawsuits that guaranteed the subsequent election of Barack H. Obama.
ReplyDeleteWell Morgan, here's the problem. Normals will not vote for Perry, Paul, the pizza man, Bachmann or L'il Ricky Retardo. So you're in a bind.
ReplyDeleteWait till Perry tries that "don't mess with Texass" strut in New Hampshire. They'll wipe the floor with him.
No, it's Romney or Obama. One a tad further right than the other so you might want to go with Romney.
No, Ducky. Romney, I don't believe, will help put America back in the right direction, but rather slow down our descent into the abyss.
ReplyDeleteA tad further right is also something which could be used to describe Gerald Ford in 1976, Bob Dole in 1996 and John McCain in 2008 and yet left-wing Democrat candidates were elected nevertheless. I supported, worked for and voted for McCain in '08 and what good did it do?
You're right, if Romney wins the nomination, I will be in a bind, but a choice between a big government Republican and a big government Democrat (both of whom talk out of both sides of their mouths) is unacceptable.
I just don't GET it; we have no choice but to beat Obama and the choices we have in doing so aren't good but ANYTHING is better.
ReplyDeleteI'm noticing a pick-up in leftwing comments at the blogs so they're getting started early this election season. We have to do something or we're done....we can't have another 4 years.
Vote for anybody you like in the primaries but vote against Obama.
I wish Santorum was doing better...I wish Paul Ryan would run. I hope Marco Rubio gets the VP nod no matter WHO runs against Obama.
"Who am I for? Anybody. But. Obama."
ReplyDeleteSame here. Heck, even Ron Paul is miles better than numbnuts hussein.
Ron Paul would be the best bet by far. He's the only one who DOES understand and respect the Constitution, and the only one with a firm grasp of economic realities. Too bad about his old womanish image, but that's the worst thing about him.
ReplyDeleteHis anti-interventionist, anti-War stance is perfectly sane. The MIC is a bunch of immoral self-serving brigands who, I believe, are serving the "Internationalist" agenda.
Mitt rhymes with you-know-what. There's a REASON for that. He's one of "them" -- whoever "they" are.
Either Obama will be the next president, or someone just like him will get the job. The Oligarchs WANT it that way.
The American political scene REEKS.

Silverfiddle said: Who am I for? Anybody. But. Obama.
ReplyDeleteThe reality is that such will be the situation at the ballot box in 2012.
At this point, the only electable candidate that the GOP has is Romney.
But he won't be electable if conservatives don't vote against Obama. Many conservatives will sit home or vote third party if Romney is the GOP candidate for POTUS.
I'm a big griper about American politics. But the hold-your-nose-and-vote method has been the case for many elections in American history -- and not just in the 20th and 21st Centuries.
Real politic sucks, but that is indeed the reality.
Let us remember that Congress can "control" the President to a great extent. Can we get some real conservatives elected to Congress? Well, we won't if the the GOP candidate for POTUS doesn't win in 2012 -- because of the coattails phenomenon. So many American voters vote the straight party line!
Christopher said: The last time in my memory the GOP did not shoot itself in the foot was with Ronald Reagan.
ReplyDeleteIMO, that comment is spot on.
The GOP has a great tradition of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
"The GOP has a great tradition of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory."
ReplyDeleteRight you are, AOW!
No WHY do you suppose that's the case?
I don't believe it's accidental or coincidental or even the product of stupidity.
~ FreeThinke
I think that Christie would be a great choice, but obviously he don't want it yet.
ReplyDeleteIf either now top three get the nomination, I'll go third party.
ReplyDeleteThat'll show 'em, getting Obama reelected.
ReplyDeleteDucky gets his facts wrong once again (unless he is deliberately lying).
ReplyDeleteCain took Godfather's Pizza from the bring of bankruptcy and turned it around.
I'm a Cain man, myself.
