Hey! Way to GO! Spike Jones will live in my head as a perennial favorite. Like Anna Russell, the International Concert Comedienne par excellence, Spike was a great master of musical satire. His stuff is so well put together and brilliantly outrageous it deserves to be considered "classic" in its field.
Comic geniuses like Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Oscar Wilde, Gilbert & Sullivan, Noel Coward, Spike Jones, Anna Russell, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Joyce Grenfell and Dudley Moore had the grace to be able poke fun at established icons and make us laugh our fool heads off without a trace of the malice, bitterness and accusatory invective that arrived with the degenerate standup comics like Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, and Shelly Berman, who arrived in the 1950's and 60's just in time to help make us hate ourselves -- and each other -- in ways never known before -- at least in American society.
Happy New Year, guys, and "Thanks for the Memories!"
