Maybe we should spread responsibility around some so both voters and congress get colored. I have heard it said before, in general voters don't like congress, but they like their representatives and senators more than others.
"I love when you eat all my chips, dear, But much more the sting of your whips, dear. You can raise welts like nobody else, As we dance to the Masochism Tango, OLE!"
Thank you once again, Tom Lehrer, for a lifetime of comic inspiration.
Yes, I included CLERGY MEMBERS quite deliberately. God knows I've worked with and for enough of them in a 45-year-career as a church organist and choirmaster. Two or three out of, perhaps, twenty were wonderful people, the rest a pile rejects, game players and toadies to the richest members of the congregation -- spineless wimps with no principles who'd do anything for money -- and a few were lechers to boot.
@FT "Why should college teachers, clergy, and psychiatrists rate so highly?"
Brilliant. At once, your comments are funny and sad.
Having said that, when we find exceptional clergy and teachers, they are world class mentors. As you know, a world class mentor (say music) isn't necessarily motivated by dollars, or politics. Think parenting.
The greats stick out like sore thumbs.
FT, did you see the indie movie "Last Quartet"? Please do if you have not. If you have, I would be interested for you to render a personal/professional musician's point of view of the emotional aspects of losing a skill (I deal with that as well) -- and perhaps comment on the interpersonal relationships within such a tight group.
My last paragraph might make an interesting article on your blog. One I would like to read some day. Aging is tough. My personal experience is that to continue to have the "fun" I must lose my memory. By that I mean, create new benchmarks. What was superior at age 50 should have little or no bearing on what brings personal gratification at age 70. We should re-set. Hope to hear from you soon. Feel free to use e-mail to share ideas as I am crafting my own article on this.
Really, I'd love to know how My Fair Lady got into this. I'm seriously missing something here...
Of course, if you think you're so witty and pretty and bright, we could do West Side Story, and then, you witty, pretty, bright guys could see tribalism as a serious problem in America today.
Long term gerrymandering, and free marketed elections, have created a congress corrupted and inept.
So, local pols do well, election after election after election, because of their party label, or their local ties, and while all the other 434 districts do their thing, they all draw apart. Because we really don't have a cohesive state of affairs in America today.
And I say you conservative voters are to blame for that. You vote republican all the time. The country is off to the right as it is, the dems have no choice but to accept that and have for 20 years now. The far-left in America has very little power.
If you keep pushing to destroy the small and weak left in America today, you will push too far, and people in the middle will be put off.
This isn't and shouldn't be about partisanship. This is about thinking bigger in government today, all the while reining it in.
This is essentially a completely different subject
We need to stop doing some things and start doing others. Like stop fighting wars on everything under the sun and start educating our kids, and giving them healthcare, and building the new highway to that new town that someday our grand-kids will call home.
Just one example. I guess I'm just being cockney here with you upper crust gentlemen.
Good LORD! Here I was actually AGREEING with you, Jersey, -- and in a very good-natured fashion too -- and like most liberals, you are so humorless and incredibly defensive you can't even take a COMPLIMENT without expressing paranoid suspicions. It really is as though "you guys, and gals, and whatizzits" were absolutely DETERMINED to remain aggravated no matter what.
It's scary that people ranked college teachers so high.
ReplyDeleteWhat's scary is we rate our Members of Congress so low, yet consistently reelect them. Abject resignation?
ReplyDelete"Abject resignation?"
ReplyDeleteNo. Just doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So who're the idiots? Congresscritters or voters?
Maybe we should spread responsibility around some so both voters and congress get colored. I have heard it said before, in general voters don't like congress, but they like their representatives and senators more than others.
ReplyDeleteThis is an insult to hard working car salesmen. How could they possibly be below our elected elite after all car salesmen work for a living.
ReplyDeleteHarmonica's?
ReplyDeleteEveryone loves their own representative but hates all the others. Tribalism in action.

Why should college teachers, clergy, and psychiatrists rate so highly?
ReplyDeleteThey're among the biggest frauds and the most pernicious influences in society today?
The VOTERS, of course, Ms Shaw.
ReplyDeleteI think you've got it! By Jove, i think you've GOT it!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe reigns insane remain cause we love pain!
By Jove, I think you've GOT it!!!!
THE REIGNS INSANE REMAIN 'CAUSE WE LOVE PAIN!
We've become a nation o Masochists!
YOWZAH!

ReplyDeleteJust you wait Henry Higgins!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm going to be hearing Rex Harrison in my head for the rest of the night. LOL

ReplyDeleteGOOD! There are many worse fates you could suffer. ;-)
