Rocky Mountain Breakdown

Mitt Romney turned in a masterful explanation of free-market economics, which explains Obama's flat-footed confusion

I was going to wait for the tortured screams and angst-ridden howls of the Obama loony left to die down before I wrote about the debate, but oh well...

Listening to Bill Bennett’s Morning in America radio program on my way to work the morning after the first presidential debate, I heard a caller make a great point.

He said that if this is how Obama prepares for meetings with world leaders, and if this is how he performs, we are in even bigger trouble than we think. That caused me to look back to his bowing, the pleading to Medvedev to give him more time to sell us down the river, the “leading from behind,” which is no leadership at all, and I realized just how astute that caller was. Obama has not led, overseas or at home.

Look at his greatest triumphs: Set piece speeches where the remarks were prepared and there was no challenge to his thinking. In Obama's defense, he has a record to run on now, and it's a junkyard of political arm-twisting, federal steamrollring, stale progressive bromides and failed statist projects.  Clarence Darrow couldn't defend that.

The Denver debate was a fitting bookend to the president's triumphant coronation in that city four years ago. It’s easy to float out on stage amid the Greek columns to adoring throngs, but it is much different to face an ideological opponent and defend your ideas and actions. Obama excels at the former and fails in the latter. He really is a rock star, but what we need is a president, and he’s not up to the task.

Who do you want representing this nation? A stumbling bumbler with an overinflated ego and a messiah complex, or an experienced, confident man who knows what he believes and can articulate it without the aid of a teleprompter?

The President did get off some good zingers...

Almost 24 hours later!  His peevishness continued into the next day when, in the worst case of delayed reaction ever, finally voiced a few weak ripostes to an adoring throng that that rewarded him with some sycophantic laughter before he slinked out of Denver.

Romney's best line:

Mitt had this to say about Obama's venture socialism and throwing taxpayer money at his well-heeled political cronies like Solyndra:
I had a friend who said you don’t just pick the winners and losers, you pick the losers, all right?
Romney also gets props for being the only candidate in history to threaten to cut off the moderator's funding.

Best post-debate line by a pundit (H/T to Leticia)...

... was by Dennis Miller, who is now my favorite talk show host:
"Obama better hope that a "kicked ass" is covered under Obamacare"
Keep you powder dry my fellow Right Blogistanis and savor this, because we've got 30 days until the election, and I guarantee it will be a nail-biter.  Obama's most powerful super PAC, the news media, will take revenge on Romney for bloodying their hero.

  1. Well said, Kurt. Obama has finally been shown for the empty suit (chair) he really is. He came nowhere close to competing with Mitt Romney. I hope Romney learns from this and keeps hammering the facts home. Obama can't keep up with them, as he keeps making them up.

  4. I was surprised to see that Romney actually had a pulse. That he trumped Obama on economic policy should have been a no-brainer; one would think he'd be head and shoulders ahead going into November.

Since Mitt hasn't spelled out a foreign policy thats markedly different than hi opponent, I might be tempted to watch that debate to see how he postures.

  5. During the whole debate Mitt Romney was at ease. He was smiling throughout the entire debate and looked Obama directly right in the eye, Obama never once showed the same respect. Who the hell does he thing he is? He is the President, not the Emperor! How prophetic. Romney Looked and Sounded More like a President Then Obama Did, and that was pitiful on Obama's part.

Are you suggesting that the more manors a person owns the kinder, more polite, honest, fair and wise he becomes?

Jeepers! I can't afford to own even one manor, and neither can anyone else in my acquaintance, but I am well known to be polite and generous in face- to-face relations.

You wouldn't by any chance have meant to talk about MANNERS, would you?

We most desperately need to teach homonyms again. How many today know -- or care -- the differences among to, two, too , there, their, they're, doe, dough, style, stile, veil, vale, or manner, manor, etc.?

I had a similar thought after the debate.

Although I was delighted that Romney had clearly won the debate, I felt embarrassment that we had a sitting President who did so pathetically in the debate. And, yes, our national security also ran through my mind as I mulled over just how incompetently Obama handled himself during the debate.

Obama's verbal spewing the following day was ludicrous, IMO. How is it that he was so wound up on Thursday, yet so "subdued" on Wednesday?

  18. And I've got plenty of reasons why Obama voters are stupid:

    Gas prices have doubled

    Household incomes have shrunk

Price of groceries is up over 15%

Unemployment may be slightly below 8% thanks to slick accounting tricks, but there are barely more people working today than when the messiah took office, and that is actually a real loss since the population has grown

Anyone voting for four more years of that can't be too smart.

That 7.8% fulfills another Obama promise, to have unemployment under 8%. "

    Are you sure?

"Sept. unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent due to an extraordinary – but implausible – estimate of 873,000 #jobs in household survey"

"Weird that payrolls are exactly on forecast but household survey is far better."

“The report presented a slew of contradictory data points, with the total employment level soaring despite the low net number,”

"Job growth remained tame in September, but a big drop in the unemployment rate sparked a huge debate about what this meant "

"The U-6 unemployment number, which accounts for the underemployed and those who have given up looking for jobs, held steady at 14.7 percent."

The greatest losses came in manufacturing, which fell 16,000.

Labor's birth-death model, which estimates jobs created and lost through newly opened and closed businesses, showed a decline of 9,000.

The unemployment rate, which is now below 8 percent for the first time since Obama took office, is being challenged because other key data points to a massive drop in the amount of people actually participating in the labor force.

Labor force participation has been at 30 year lows for the past two months. If participation were at the same levels as when Obama took office in January 2009, there would be 5.1 million more Americans counted as looking for work. If those people were still counted in the labor force today, the US unemployment rate would be 10.7 percent, not 7.8 percent.

"I have no idea where this number came from," he told Fox News. "I don't know what the right number is, but I'll tell you these numbers dont smell right when you think about where the economy is right now."

Following Friday's report that the unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, Welch wrote in a tweet: "Unbelievable jobs numbers..these Chicago guys will do anything..can't debate so change numbers."

Welch wasn't the only one offering conspiracy theories though; Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) wrote on his Facebook page that the unemployment rate fell below 8 percent through "manipulation of data" and CNBC personality Rick Santelli said "I told you they'd get it under 8 percent -- they did! You can let America decide how they got there!"

  67. Politics is LIARAMA.

It always comes down to a choice between liars.

You have to lie to be successful in getting elected and in holding office, because the one thing John Q. Publick cannot abide is The Truth.

So, what it amounts to is this:

Whose lies -- or which liar -- attract you most

I'll go with the one who at least makes a decent show of pretending to support maximum freedom for the individual to do his darndest to make maximal use of his talents and strengths to provide well for himself, his family and his heirs.

This world is an inherently UNFAIR place. "Equality" is a much misunderstood incept. In truth there is no such thing and never could be, therefore I am suspicious of -- and derisive towards -- anyone who claims he's going to "level the playing field."

It cannot -- and SHOULD NOT - be done.

The only sort of "equality" I believe in is the kind our Founding Fathers envisioned:

Everyone should be given AN EQUAL CHANCE to do whatever he can to better himself. PERIOD!

All that means is that no one should be KEPT DOWN -- LIMITED by LAW or CUSTOM -- relegated by the circumstances of his birth, race or religion to a LIMITED status.

Obviously, the guy with an IQ of 80 has less chance to do well than the guy with an IQ of 130. That's a given. However, having a high IQ is no guarantee of success either. Other factors such as ambition, the will to persevere, good looks or the lack thereof, and those indefinable things we call "personality," "character," "temperament," "spirit" -- and just plain luck -- have much to do with the eventual outcome of a life.

The highly intelligent, creative, ambitious should not have the fruits of their labor STOLEN to provide a life of "equal quality" to those with fewer advantages.

On the other hand those who are well endowed with beauty, brains, talent and ambition have no right to take UNFAIR advantage of the less fortunate and ill favored.

The only kind of "fairness" that might be possible in this life would be to LEAVE EACH OTHER ALONE -- stop INTERFERING -- stop EXPLOITING -- stop SUPERVISING -- stop BOSSING AROUND -- stop DEROGATING, VILIFYING and CONDEMNING.

Law should be written and applied ONLY to prevent and punish MURDER, MAYHEM, RAPE, THEFT, VANDALISM, EXTORTION and PERSISTENT, ORGANIZED HARASSMENT.

Beware of him in whom the impulse to punish is strong.

Beware to of anyone who tells you he can lead you out of the wilderness.

In the final analysis we all must find our own way to fulfillment and satisfaction.

Or as one of my teachers was fond of saying

NO ONE CAN EAT YOUR DINNER FOR YOU.

    1. Wolfie Boy Stevie has infeed provided a very important public service. It has exposed himself/herself as one of the net's biggest liars and hate mongers.

Living in it's dark and dank world must be hell.

Imagine how boring and pathetic her life must be for her to haunt places she's not wanted, playing her broken record. It's sad.

    1. I wish I could feel sorry for Stevie. All I can muster for its kind is loathing. It is sad, and it is also pathetic. Stevie, and individuals like them are tortured souls and thus dangerous. When they snap it usually is very ugly.

That said BLOGGER really does need to install some version of TERMINIX so we might rid our blogs of vermin at will.

"Comment Moderation" is NOT the answer. It just tends to discourage honest people from posting remarks.

  75. And you're doing an excellent job! Why, by jove! Your posts are so weighty and fact-laden, we'd think they were doctoral theses!

  76. Ah Wolfie Boy stevie, you are most undoubtedly the self proclaimed factual balance the world needs...

In your alternative universe you no doubt are worshiped as a sage and wise elder by the imaginary voices in your head. They listen to your every word and hail them as truth and revelations.

Now, go to your mind shrine Wolfie Boy stevie where you will be given the adulation you so desperately crave. The ghosts of your empty cranial cavity await your return.

  77. Jews don't need your help fighting anti-Semitism, Stevie. Because your kind of help is getting thousands of Jews killed and diverting billions of new sheckels away from the general economy to defense purposes in Israel.

Why aren't you denouncing the Palestinians, Stevie? Hypocrite, much?

Jew's in the real world have real problems, Stevie. Try addressing THEM for a change instead of tilting at windmills.

  78. ...I know, it's easier to solve imaginary problems than real ones.

  79. Romney is neither conservative nor libertarian. He's not even right of center.

Nor is he a Muslim sympathizer or a Socialist or a Racist or an American and Jew Hater?

I wouldn't bet the farm. Progressive leftists like Romney tend to also be al of those things.

Breitbart says more than half said "it wasn't fair".

Hmmm, did they all use the same phrase?

Sorry, Silverfiddle, not much there. Then we have marine following Breitbart and talking about people who don't get outside MSNBC much. Come on, Silverfiddle, you understand anecdotal.

  82. "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Lose,"

Well, sanity is in short supply.

Don't look now, but the Republican Party is running an anti-Reagan progressive leftist pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-illegal immigration, health care socializing advocate of cap-and-trade taxation upon energy production as a "conservative."

    Have fun with that.

And now there are Obama supporters complaining that it wasn't "fair" for the president to have to answer questions without the aid of a teleprompter. Utterly ridiculous! These people are living in fantasy land.

He was against gay marriage before he was for it...

He wasn't going to have lobbyists in the White House...
