Thoughts for the Weekend

Some random thoughts on a Friday...

Question of the Week

Who posed a greater danger to the President this past week? Ted Nugent or The Secret Service?

Every now and then, a politician slips up and tells the truth…
“A fewer and fewer number of people do very well, and everybody else is running faster and faster just to keep pace”
“The choice in this election,” said Axelrod, “is between an economy that produces a growing middle class and that gives people a chance to get ahead and their kids a chance to get ahead and an economy that continues down the road we are on.” (NY Post)
I agree with David Axelrod. Only a fool would vote to reelect President Obama and continue on the economic road to hell he's taking us down.

Humanity-Hating Left

Hardcore green warmists exhibit a malthusian angst and eugenics-tinged desire for population control. The honest global warming advocates will tell you mankind is a blight on the planet as they cheer for our extinction:
“Humans have the unfortunate distinction of being the most destructive and harmful species on earth,” he writes. “The amount of suffering in the world could be radically reduced if there were no more” of us. (Professor David Benatar, quoted in New Yorker Magazine)
I would like to point out that if man went extinct, alligators would still gobble ducks and swans, fish would still eat one another, raptors would continue to swoop down and kill cute little birdies and furry rodents, weasels and snakes would not stop feasting on eggs, monkeys would still battle one another with sticks and stones, male animals would keep on forcibly copulating with females, elk and deer would still die of starvation in winter, black widows would continue to bite the heads off of their mates once the fun was over, animals would continue polluting the atmosphere by emitting methane gas, and lightning would still start forest fires.

For a further Warmest Alarmist reality check, see The Limits of The Limits of Growth. It features 40-year-old predictions by the egghead worry warts of the early 70's, armed with statistical models from MIT, (MIT! The science is settled!). Every indicator they predicted would get worse has gotten better.

Have a happy and blessed weekend!

IMO, the latter.

That said, I find Ted Nugent's rants demeaning to conservatives and conservatism in general. In fact, I'll be posting on that topic next week.

They have Bill Maher, we have Uncle Ted (who I would love to go hunting javelina with, btw).

Neither are politicians, and the phony outrage from all sides is getting old.

If he has a guitar, Nugent is clearly the greater danger. What a stiff.

For his next trick, Silverfiddle will explain the difference between Romney and Obama.

Our culture and our characterr as a people is not what it once was, Kurt. The changes have not been for the better.

Easy Ducky: Romney has displayed competence in his adult life. Obama has not.

I'm not a fan of Ted Nugent's.

And he does have the right to freedom of expression.

That said, I admit that I didn't like what he said and the way that he said -- at the NRA Convention, of all places.

Frankly, the screeching from all sides is getting mighty tiresome.

PS: I have no doubt that Nugent is quite the hunter.

Ducky's here said...

Not so easy, Silver, clearly.

I'm looking for a policy area which would radically change under Romney.

Other than the repeal of "Obamacare" I don't understand what would change.

We would still have the situation advanced under Obummer of the financial system being severed from the economy in general, Romney would be bellicose, education would continue to be privatized, he'd take the same middle of the road approach to civil issues, still strengthen the police state.

Can't see a difference. Neither is going to resolve the liquidity trap.

Help me out here.

Nugent better be a better hunter than he is a guitar player. A regular freaking Wes Montgomery.

"40-year-old predictions by the egghead worry warts of the early 70's"

Anyone who actually understands science knows that nothing is ever settled. Arguing by going back and looking at where science was in the past is liking arguing with someone by quoting them when they 5 years old, as a debate tactic this is spurious at best, sleazy at worst.

"I would like to point out that if man went extinct, alligators would still gobble ducks and swans, fish would still eat one another..."

What does any of that have to do with ""the amount of suffering in the world could be radically reduced if there were no more" of us?"

Do alligators run power plants? Do fish chop down the rain forests? What planet do you live on, Silver? Who populates it?

"Only a fool would vote to reelect President Obama and continue on the economic road to hell he's taking us down."

Oh, so we should put the GOP back in there, right? They did nothing to cause all this!

If it would take a fool to vote for Obama, then it take a mentally handicapped sociopath to want the GOP back in there!

As for the first question, that would be Ted Nugent. Since his fans are not morally, ethically, or mentally stable and decent people, and may be susceptible to acting on his sicko rhetoric.

Silver, the "road we're on" was paved by the sleazy criminal Republican one-party-state you idiotic cons put in office. Obama has done little to change that road - he hasn't been able to do much, as the remaining sleazy criminal Republicans put politics ahead of good of the nation. The tax rates are the same, the regulatory oversight is the same, bad, dumb ideas like the repeal of Glass-Steagall remain in place, the unfunded wars go on, etc, etc.

ALL THIS WAS PERPETRATED BY YOUR GUYS.

Nugent didn't come close, and the Secret Service agrees. He's never used the kind of language Maher uses on a constant basis...it's not even close.

Ducky, by the way...again you pick on his music instead of the point of the post? You're consistent, I have to hand you that. Do you KNOW that you do that? And ya, the REAL BIG spenders were Reagan and Bush...how many TRILLIONS in their administrations? Is it 13 trillion now with Obama? Good try, ducky!!

I'm wondering if the Sec. Service is just tired of protecting a guy they don't respect? They're usually so fantastic, as "I'm Flat Broke.." says. makes sense to me.

Romney will hopefully give more breaks to the small businesses which are the engine of our economy, he'll close loopholes, ...who knows what else?
But one thing we know; he won't be appeasing for us overseas and he won't be bowing down to Arab Kings and he won't be dissing our allies and sucking up to communist enemies.
And then there's the SCOTUS. That's enough for me. He won't be appointing any more Elena Kagan's, that's for SURE.

"Romney has displayed competence in his adult life. Obama has not."--SF

Because winning a US Senate seat [Romney lost in his Senate seat bid] and beating out the powerful Clinton machine then winning the presidency of the most powerful nation on the planet shows a total lack of compentency in any area?

I'm afraid you can't have it both ways. You don't manage to overcome obstacles such as Obama faced running for the presidency and then overnight become "incompetent."

I have a suspicion that you don't like him or how he governs. That doesn't make him incompetent; that makes him someone you totally disagree with. Disagreement doesn't equal incompetence.

But let's talk about incompetency where it applies to my ex-governor, whom you extol as competent. He managed to drop Massachusetts to 47th in the nation in job creation while he was governor:

"A core argument of Romney’s presidential campaign is that he knows how to create jobs based on his career in finance. As governor, Romney faced his first test in applying his business background to a slow-growing economy — and data show that the results were unremarkable.

Massachusetts was one of just four states that by the time of the financial crisis still had not recovered all the jobs they had lost during the 2001 recession. And, as Romney’s opponents have pointed out, the state ranked 47th in job creation during his term."

We have actual stats on how poorly Romney did as a chief executive in managing job creation. Will he somehow miraculously change into a job creating superstar once he's president.

Will he become competent in that arena, after having been incompetent, once he moves into the Oval Office?

I hate to say I told you so, but honestly, this guy was a joke from day one and he has done nothing but prove it since day one. The only thing I do is HOPE that CHANGE will come in November 2012! We can't take any more of this guy. He is an embarrassment to our country, and he is ruining us. I was ashamed of Jimmy Carter but this guy has surpassed him. I hate to think about what more harm he'll do to America if this incompetent amateur socialist is re-elected. The only thing I do is HOPE that CHANGE will come in November . All he has done for the past 3 and ½ years was stir up racism" and bad-mouth the USA all over the rest of the world. The only thing that he is competent at is dstroying this country.

I was responding to your statement in which you stated that Mr. Obama displayed no competency in his life and Romney has. I didn't detect any hyperbole as a rhetorical device in that statement. It sounded like you were making a factual assertion.

You apparently forgot that Obama managed to gradutate with honors from Harvard, Romney's alma mater. Does that somehow mean that Romney was competent in doing so but Obama was not?

"Because winning a US Senate seat ... then winning the presidency ...shows a total lack of competency in any area?"--SK

Does any politician? Sure they have teams to help them achieve their goals. But did, say, Rick Perry manage to incompetently screw up in his performances in the debates on his own? Or did someone help him crash and burn?

I can see this discussion is deteriorating into nitpicking.

I merely wanted to point out to SF that his assertion that Mr. Obama has shown no competency in his life is a silly statement. And I know he knows that.

BTW, Nugent is a thrid-class jerk, IMO, and the Secret Service men who were involved in the scandal need to be booted.

Shaw, so by the standards you have set, Romney and George W. Bush are more accomplished than Obama.

And yes, you nailed it. I don't like his policies. He's kept the worst of Bush policies and added his own destruction to the mix.

Look around you. He's an abject failure. He had a democrat house and senate for two years. They had a golden opportunity, and yet still we stagger on, teetering upon the precipice of another recession and mired in debt that makes Reagan look like a skinflint.

Ecce homo

Shaw Kenawe said...

"Shaw, so by the standards you have set, Romney and George W. Bush are more accomplished than Obama."

What "standards" do you refer to? If you read my comment carefully, I merely point out that your statement that Obama has displayed no competency in his life is silly and, of course, untrue.

I said nothing about Romney, and especially not Bush, except to point out that Romney, while governor of Mass., was unable to create jobs, and in his political career, not able to win a US Senate seat in Mass., even though another GOPer, Scott Brown, did.

We've hammered this point enough.

SF: "He's an abject failure. He had a democrat house and senate for two years..."

Of course Obama is not an abject failure. This rhetoric is nothing more than pay-back from the conservatives because the Dems labeled Bush "Miserable Failure" while he was president, and it was even a Google bomb. So now it's nyah nyah nyah time for the conservatives to get even. Just like junior high school days! LOL!

The same can be said about the previous administration when GWB had the House and Senate for SIX years but failed to deliver on his promise of a Constitutional amendment for the DOMA. Bush threw his support behind a federal marriage amendment after events in Massachusetts and San Francisco, but he never delivered on his promise. And while the GOP held the Executive and Legislative branches, he did nothing to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Plus, Bush himself has admitted his biggest failure was not privatizing Social Security--and then there's the Iraq War debacle.

"Now watch this drive."

When Obama took office in Jan. 2009the effects of the financial disaster had not bottomed out in the unemployment rate. The rate in late 2009 went to 10%. It is now at around 8.3%.

And no matter how certain conservatives twist themselves into ideological pretzels to deny Obama credit--it was HE who got rid of the mass murderer, Osama bin Laden. How you or anyone could call that an abject failure is a mystery to me.

But when you mix in your extreme dislike for the man, I begin to get an inkling of where that hyperbole is coming from.

Silverfiddle said...

I call him an abject failure based upon the evidence presented. He does not deserve reelection based upon his dismal performance and president. He's in over his head and his advisers stink.

Entrenched in battle lines built to endure,

Twists logic into seeing white as black.

Examining our leaders’ feet of clay
Removes us from confronting our own flaws,

"...keep shoveling it, it's amusing to watch people try to defend the indefensible."

What is even more amusing is people ignoring the indisputable fact that the president [and his administration] who preceded the present one started the long slow slide into financial degradation.

You're heaping criticism on the guy who had to put out several 10-alarm fires with one hand tied behind his back [the opposition hoped he failed at all he did and contributed nothing] that the kid playing with matches started. And you call him a failure because he's not doing it fast enough or the way you would do it.

That's what is truly indefensible.

viburnum:

"Any one in the office would have done the same..."

You're wrong. No less than ex-Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates said this about Mr. Obama's decision to take out bin Laden:

" 'Frankly, my heart was in my mouth... There was a lot of uncertainty about whether he was there. This was a very risky operation. So, I was very concerned. So was the President... I worked for a lot of these guys and this is one of the most courageous calls -- decisions -- that I think I've ever seen a president make.'

Gates cites the uncertainty of the intelligence and the potential consequences if the mission failed as reinforcing his view of Obama's courage in making the call."

That you and others here continue to assert that anyone in office would have done the same is proof that you base that conjecture on nothing more than your utter contempt for Mr. Obama and not established facts.

I believe Robert Gates would know a hell of a lot more about the kind of courage that decision required, not you.

Silverfiddle said...

As I've already said, his disastrous results speak for themselves.

And yes, I do have contempt for the Obama administration, because they have contempt for us, their "enemies" that they need to punish, we bible-clinging gun-toting racists out in the sticks.

And when Iran gets nukes... well,Allahu Akbar!
Only blind, and hateful liberals like you could deny that Obama’s policies are a failure. The rest of the world knows how very wrong he is for America.
Putting a incompetent man such as Obama in the most important job on the planet is like putting a five year behind the controls of a jet airplane in mid-flight.

Shaw Kenawe said...

SF: And yes, I do have contempt for the Obama administration, because they have contempt for us, their "enemies"

Wow. Such galloping paranoia. Enemies?

It is the GOP who started with their contemptuous "I Hope He Fails" rhetoric before he was inaugurated! Contempt? How more contemptuous can a party be than to try to sabotage a guy who won a clear and substantial victory in an election. Three months into Mr. Obama's presidency--April 2009--the Tea Party was bawling at their demonstrations that they wanted their country back. That's undermining the new president before he even had his cabinet chosen. You don't see that as going after him as though he were the enemy? Cute.

"..that they need to punish, we bible-clinging gun-toting racists out in the sticks."

Wow! Did you eat some victim flakes with your milk and bananas this morning? How has the president "punished" you? What rights have you lost? BTW, Mr. Obama has EXPANDED your gun rights. But don't let your feelings of having been horribly abused by Mr. Obama and his administration get in the way of facts.

The innumerable racist emails and comments that have been passed around the internet since Obama's election have been generated by GOP politicians, judges, and party leaders. That's a fact. I think it's more stupidity than racism, but racism is part of it. If the shoe fits...

"He and his politburo reek contempt for middle America."

That's an accusation backed up by zero evidence and fed by your anger at having a Democrat in the WH. Make up a litany of phantom abuses then attack the guy for what he hasn't done.

Calling Ray Bolger! Calling Ray Bolger! We've found your strawman right here!
