A Tale of Two States

Campaign season is upon us, so we’ll be subjected to wild claims and creative rhetoric from the left. Conservative Scott Walker is the prime target, with his recall election looming. Take him down, and the public sector unions can continue strangling state governments and shaking down taxpayers.

Here’s the latest pathetic progressive effort:

Pat Quinn, Governor of the failed state of Illinois is crowing about how Illinois is beating Wisconsin, and that Scott Walker needs to learn a lesson from the Wisconsin Democrats’ hidey-hole to the south. It’s laughable.

Here’s the stat everyone is agape over: Illinois job growth beat Wisconsin’s for the six month time period of September 2011 to February 2012. Business Week reports…
"Republican Whipping Boy Illinois Beats Wisconsin on Jobs"
As with all progressive propaganda, there's more to the story.  A little Krugmanesque selective slicing and dicing of statistics generated the headline, but here’s the reality:

* Wisconsin’s Over the Year unemployment change (March 2011 to March 2012) of of -0.8 beat Illinois’ change of only -0.5.

* Illinois unemployment is 8.8%, while Wisconsin’s sits two points lower at 6.8%

It gets worse for The State That Liberalism and Unions Destroyed. Illinois is on the brink of fiscal collapse, with a backlog of unpaid bills estimated at around $9 billion. Yes Billion!
Wisconsin’s public-employee pension system, considered among the healthiest in the nation, was funded between 94 percent and 99 percent in 2010. (Lessons of Two States)
Meanwhile, Illinois’ five state-funded pension systems recorded total unfunded liabilities of 53 percent, about $81 billion, as of June, 2011, said Dave Urbanek, public information officer for theTeachers’ Retirement System, or TRS, of the State of Illinois. (Lessons of Two States)
So how does Illinois post any job gains at all? Bribery.
Since 2009, Quinn has spent more than $500 million in corporate welfare to bribe companies not to flee the tax environment he has created. (Illinois Moves Toward State of Insolvency)
Reader Comments from the article capture it better than I ever could…
RestoreUSA: Obama just wasn't satisfied helping Illinois to go insolvent, as president his wasteful spending has the country over $16 trillion in debt, Medicare and Social Security going broke, and no plan to fix anything. How's that for Hope & Change?
Kev2: The gravy train is running out of gravy,...
HD: Big government is insane. Deval Patrick did the same thing here. Raise taxes then bribe companies with corporate welfare , like Hollywood, which has been costly to taxpayers and has only added a small handful of jobs, which all go to the powerful Mobsters,... er.... I meant Teamsters...
Escondido Surfer: Of course the federal government must bail out IL, CA and NY. There is no other solution. The funding for this bailout is obvious as well. An excise tax on government worker pension benefits will restore sanity and fund the reckless pension plans without unions or their lackey politicians approval.
This is just the beginning folks. Progressives will lie, cheat and steal to cling to power. You will be hearing much more red propaganda as we get closer to the election. Don’t fall for it. Go googling to get the other side of the story, because with power-hungry progressives losing their clawhold on America, there’s always another side to the story.

OFF TOPIC -- sorta -- at last something about which we may REJOICE:

That friggin RINO sellout RICHARD LUGAR has been OUSTED in the Indiana primary.

HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH!

Is there a faint hope on the horizon that this could be the start of a trend?

Frankly, I'd rather deal with an open liberal slimeball than a wimpy, moderate RINO any day.

The rhetoric coming from Quinn and the rest of the liberals is standard operating procedure for them. They are guilty as heck of the things they are accusing conservatives of. I would expect nothing less.

To make matter worse, Quinn raises income tax rates by 2% to pay down the debt, and then proceeded to borrow the money instead.
The moron in Springfield barely won in 2010 and because of a hand full of union junkies, we are stuck with this tool for another 2 years.

A given!

Yes, the Leftist propaganda war will hit the beginning of its full swing in August or September.

But something else is going on a "the grassroots level." People are fed up! See THIS, for example. When has that happened before?

FT,
That IS an interesting result in Indiana. I see the outcome as cause for hope in November.

There you go again, Ducky, ASSuming that if government doesn't do it, it won't get done.

The Chicago Way has gone state-wide. Now Obama wants to take it national.

It's all Quinn' fault! He's been Governor for a whole year and half and created all this deficit and unemployment! Why doesn't he create jobs like Walker! Look at all the Wisconsinites gathering signatures and making phone calls to have him recalled! That's job creation!

And it's not called bribery it's called extortion what Sears Corp. and CME Group did to steal taxpayer dollars and to undercut the tax base for schools in their area.

What Sears does, like Target and so many companies, is to create a special tax haven zone in one state (in this case Illinois) where their Headquarters is located. Then profits from stores Nation wide are electronically transferred to the HQ which pays "taxes" at the lower rate. It's like when a rich plutocrat funnels his money into off-shore accounts in the Cayman Islands or Luxembourg...

Illinois is the fifth most populated state in the union, behind CA, TX, NY, and FL. Of these heavily populated states, the old industrial states of NY and IL have suffered tremendously from deindustrialization (aka: Free Trade) over the past generation and a half. This has nothing to do with "unions," as non-union US manufacturers have pretty much the same labor overhead as union shops. This has to with Free Trade with corrupt kleptocracies, juntas, and communist states with controlled economies. We did not have this problem when we were dealing with comparable trading partners in Europe.

Now, to compare WI with IL is silly NO MATTER WHO'S DOING IT. These two states have strikingly different demographics, economies, etc.

It is silly comparing them, Jersey, so I wonder why the red propagandists attempted it.

You are also right on the mark mentioning corrupt kleptocracies and juntas. Third world disctatorships have nothing on the Chicago political machine.

A past president of Panama I happened to lunch with years ago insisted that Chicago is where his and other countries learned their techniques.

Illinois's government is filthy and vampiric. Look at how many former governors ended up in jail.

Oh, for Christ's sake, Silver, why do you have to be soooooo ridiculously hyperbolic?

You want to talk about corruption? What about the Red States? Plenty of corruption there.

Try to be a little less partisan, will ya'? It gets annoying.

I don't believe many people outside of Indiana really grasp how unthinkable it was just a few short months ago Richard Lugar would lose in ANY election, much less a primary. AND a 20% loss. Those numbers had better be waking up both sides of the aisle. We have had enough! If the incumbents keep thinking they can spend like a bunch of GSA employees on a drunken shopping spree, they'll all be Lugered.

Funny how the total votes in the Dem hissy-fit barely reached half of the alleged signatures you proudly proclaim as some sort of indicator. Estimates are that 17% of those are ..wait for it.....RETHUGLICANS!!! messing with those precious little union thugs who watched their candidate get creamed.

Wai-wait...how much money did they spend?

Right, like Republicans don't due the same thing. It's the Republicans who are leaders of the House, who have passed no helpful legislation.

Please name a "red state" where more than 4 recent governors have gone to jail. As for the backlog of unpaid bills and the raided pension funds, it's a matter of public record.

Trust me, the good people of Illinois wish it were just hyperbole.

Anon: If you can find such blatant lying propaganda from the right, bring it.

Speaking of passing no legislation, Harry Reid's senate hasn't passed a budget since Obama took office, and the dems had it all for Obama's first two years. Obama and the Pelosicrats = complete failures

Of course you want to raise taxes and then offer discounts, that way you can offer selective discounts, otherwise they wouldn't be beholden to their political cronies.

Silver, you asked me to "Please name a "red state" where more than 4 recent governors have gone to jail. As for the backlog of unpaid bills and the raided pension funds, it's a matter of public record."

Yes, and I know you're a big fan of written records, but if that is you argument that Blue States are somehow more crooked than Red States, then you are making a flimsy, specious, rather disappointing argument.

You (should) know full well that corruption knows no partisan bounds and is widely and equally distributed throughout the partisan and non-partisan world.

And I seriously doubt you are an expert on every level of American political corruption who could make the argument that Wisconsin is any more or less corrupt than Illinois. These are big states, Silver. Who knows what all shenanigans go on in all the many halls of those two states?

I'm sorry, but it's just such a useless, pointless argument. If you really believe right wingers are less corrupt then left wingers, then have I got a bridge for you! Just write a check for everything you've got to:

Duck,
Hope for what, AOW? That your husband loses his health benefits?

He's going to lose those health benefits, anyway. ObamaCare destroys Medicare Advantage plans. Why? Because such plans are not "true Medicare" and are managed by private companies.

I think that we all know that Medicare is not going to disappear overnight -- no matter who is elected. Too many health care facilities depend on Medicare. Can you imagine how many unemployed health-care workers there would be if Medicare were tanked overnight?

Yes, Medicare as it is presently structured is unsustainable. But Medicare can certainly be phased out and tweaked so as to curb costs to the taxpayers.

I will admit that if Mr. AOW lost his Social Security Disability, such a loss would be a financial hardship for this household. However, we did manage to keep our heads above water for 30 months before Mr. AOW's Social Security kicked in.

There is silence because Margaret Thatcher was correct:

Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money.

@ Jersey: And I seriously doubt you are an expert on every level of American political corruption who could make the argument that Wisconsin is any more or less corrupt than Illinois

I am not an expert, but I just did make an argument that Illinois is vastly more corrupt than Wisconsin. You've provided not one shred of information to refute my argument. You're all bluster on this one, pal.

BTW, I never made the case that blue states are more corrupt. You are the one who speciously introduced that one, as you always do.

Wisconsin is a blue state, just not corrupt like Illinois.
