"To the noble torch-bearing Afghans... We understand your justifiable hatred and shouty murderousness! We bow down to your righteous rampaging."
Our bowing and scraping is not cooling the feral, instinctual anger sparked by us burning some books that the holy jihadis had desecrated first by scribbling in them. Instead, the flames climb higher at each western apology.
When has apologizing to ignorant, intolerant, bigoted haters ever worked? When? When in the entire history of Islam has an apology to it or its practitioners ever quelled the bonfires of fury and murder?
I'm waiting for leadership to completely collapse and announce that all 130,000 troops will be forcibly converted to Islam and be ordered to receive religious instruction from the Taliban.
Grievance Hustlers
This is being stoked by a small number of misanthropic manipulators that do not represent all Afghanis or all Muslims. Sadly, the vast majority are far worse than that. They are ignorant and manipulable; a willing crowd dancing to the macabre tune when Explody the Fire-Breathing Clown and his Rampaging Circus comes to town.
Aussie Brendan O'Neill sees striking similarities between the east and west's professional victims who manipulate their enemies with perpetual outrage and offense-taking:

Ironically, these pretty craven apologies from NATO and the Obama administration for an innocent mistake made by two NATO personnel are likely only to have inflamed the protests.
Because, as is the case over here, in our ever more touchy and sensitive societies, when you tiptoe around a certain group of people, when you buy into the idea that offending cultural sensibilities is the greatest sin of our age, you actually give people a licence to feel offended.
When you apologise for causing offence and promise never, ever to do it again, you give succour to the idea that offensiveness is a unique and terrible evil, and you flatter the ostentatious offence-taking of groups who wish to be protected by a moral force-field from public debate or ridicule.
[...] NATO has made itself a hostage to fortune, giving Afghan radicals a licence to go mental at the next whiff of any slight, whether intentional or accidental, against Islam. (Buying into the Myth)
Canuck Lorne Gunter says we need to get out now, and I agree...
The deadly riots over the burning of Korans at the NATO airbase at Bagram prove that Western forces have accomplished about as much as they can to civilize the place (which isn't as much as many of us had hoped) and now it’s time to go.
No apologies for the burnt holy books. No charges against the soldiers involved, as demanded by Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Just pull up stakes and leave and let those screaming and shouting their hatred for America and the West fend for themselves under the next Taliban government. (Time to Quit Afghanistan)We need to get the hell out now. No negotiations, no deals, just get the hell out. Turn it over to the Taliban, the Iranians, the Uzbeks, anyone, who cares... Turn it over the the Pakistanis, tell the Chinese who are in there mining millions in precious metals that they've got to provide their own protection, but just get the hell out.
They can tear Karzai limb from limb on CNN and burn down every last female clinic and girls's schoolhouse. I don't care. We are messing with crazy people who don't want democracy, they don't want their nation built, and they sure as hell don't want us messing around in their business.
We need to respect that and get the hell out.

I have came to the belief that these people want nothing to do with changing their country. They have been given chance after chance to change their behavior, yet they continue to exhibit the same kind of irrational violence that they have been exhibiting for many years.
We should remove ourselves from their countries and allow them to do their worst. At the same time, we should explain to them how catastrophic the results will be, if they choose to take their violence outside their own borders. We should leave them no room for them to misunderstand what we will do to them, if they do.
Hear hear! Good post Silver, Obama as CIC ought to order the troops out within 72 hours. And tell Karzai to kiss our Yankee assess.
So the koran was burned, and these savages get upset? Hm.
They'd really blow a gasket if they knew what I would use their koran for. Toilet paper, anyone?
Speaking from experience, parts of the Middle East are indeed living in an almost medieval mindset. Most of these nations don't even have indoor plumbing.
These scenes of outrage and mass anger remind me of what happens when a group of monkeys is thrown a rubber ball.
Let Afghan fall. Their poppy seed fields should make the all happy.
Apologies mean nothing. These slavering mad-dog savages look for any excuse to slaughter people (much more often their neighbors than innocent foreign troops).
Milk in the fridge sour? Time to lop off someone's head while screaming praises to the Muslim god.
Thank you for this post, Kurt.
With these words you have at last given credence, albeit tacitly, to everything RON PAUL has been saying about our foreign policy:
"We need to get the hell out now.

I would only change one thing: "They can tear Karzai -- and the NEOCONS -- limb from limb, ... etc."
The Afhgans, the Pakistanis, the Iranians, the Iraqis, the Syrians and the Egyptians ARE crazy -- so is ninety eight percent of the whole fuggin' world -- and WE have been even CRAZIER ever to imagine that we could -- or SHOULD -- make any effort or bear any expense in an attempt to REFORM the way OTHER people live their lives.
The only possible excuse for "intervention" should be if we had CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE that we were to be attacked on OUR shores, and knew that "intervention" could NEUTRALIZE the attack before it started.
Otherwise DEFENSE against actual attack -- and MASSIVE OVERWHELMING RETALIATION if attack occurs -- should be the only reason we maintain a military force.
In the future our foreign policy should be determined to make every attempt to ANNIHILATE anyone who attacks US. NOT "understand" them, NOT "help" them, NOT try to become more "sensitive" to their savage, quaintly barbaric folkways, NOT to make any attempt whatsoever to "appreciate their point of view," just ERADICATE THEM -- OBLITERATE THEM -- WIPE THEM OUT.
I am sure that RON PAUL, who has been stupidly and viciously mischaracterized by The Establishment -- and by that I mean the DNC, the RNC, their handmaidens and henchmen aka the ENEMEDIA and the CAPTAINS of INTERNATIONAL INTERESTS -- would approve of our maintaining a strong DEFENSE.
The proponents of the Project for a Neoconified American Conglomerate should be summarily dragged from their cushy little hidey holes, clapped in irons, then drawn and quartered on national TV.

Afghanistan has been a wild land since the beginning of time. No one has ever succeeded there and there's no shame in admitting it isn't worth another American life.
If there weren't so daggumed many natural resources there and if it weren't one of Brzezenski's crucial geopoltical pivots for world domination, the USG wouldn't be there. This democracy talk is just window dressing for us boobs back home.
Smedly Butler knew exactly what he was talking about when he wrote War is a Racket.
I agree that we ought to get out, but after more than a decade of dealing with these savages there's just no excuse for this.
"...Accounts from some of the workers at the landfill suggested that the two people were oblivious to the significance of what they were doing. They made no attempt to hide the books, instead appearing to be routinely carrying out their duties. ..." NY Times 2/21/2012

Afghanistan hasn't had a functioning central government in all of recorded history but the American military had the hubris to think it could install one.
Time to wise up.
I dread leaving, the crack Afghan spec ops are ging to night drop and put botulism in the water supply. What will we do without the military there to protect our freedoms and bring democracy to the world?

It's past time to get the hell out of Afghanistan and leave those people to the way of life they prefer to pursue.
PS: Those Korans that were burned were furnished on our taxpayer's dime.
I wonder how many of these rioting Afghans were in those photos early on in the war -- the photos of kids gleefully accepting candy from our troops and hugging them.
Just a thought.
FT,
WE have been even CRAZIER ever to imagine that we could -- or SHOULD -- make any effort or bear any expense in an attempt to REFORM the way OTHER people live their lives.
Remember when GWB and Al Gore debated in 2000 and GWB took a stand against nation building?
Now look at the mess we're in -- thanks to reversing his supposedly core belief about foreign affairs.
GWB was never his own man, AOW. He was nothing more than a pawn of The Oligarchs -- and they would include his very own father.
Algore would have been no better -- and frankly not much worse. I rather wish he HAD taken the White house in 2000. Then we have to listen to all trash talk that comes out way. It would be directed at the D'Rats, instead -- or would it?

Stop SNEERING, DUcky. Your face is going ti freeze, and spoil ALL your chances for a happier existence -- if you are even CAPABLE of happiness, which seems highly dubious from the way you comport yourself in these precincts.

Brilliant. What you are seeing over there is PC BS. This war would have been over 7 years ago, if it wasn't for the "rules of engagement" crap.
Whatever happened to just “kill them”?
Second, political correctness plays a huge role in the obvious policy set by either the NATO, the Pentagon and/or the Commander-n-chief of even releasing this incident to the media.
Did they not learn this a year ago?
Who in the F**K is running this war?
This was done at a NATO operation, but Americans are the target.
It’s high time we stop ‘playing’ war and start engaging in war and get this thing over and done with.
FT,
Al Gore was such a micro-manager that he'd have been frozen into inaction on 9/11, IMO.
Let Afghan fail.
Let the Taliban have it, with its poppy fields and drug trade.
Let the savages have their masters.
It was a horrid mistake to seek to bring democracy to a nation of third-world slaves. Bush started it, Obama continued it. No one asked the American people what we wanted to do.
Again, let the moon-god of Islam have this nation and destroy it. It's their affair, not ours.
Apologizing to religious bigots is stupid, it should not be done. Therefore I can't wait until the entire conservative movement tells Sick Rantorum to shut the fuck up and keep his religious zealotry and intolerance out of America!
We've seen the horror that giving in the the American zealots and Dominionists is having on our country as they kill doctors and try to impose their evil dogmatic ignorance on millions of Free People.
Get out of America you religious freaks!
Gene,
Your salvation from religious zealots already exists. It's called the 1st Amendment. Marvelous idea. Works both ways.
Gene: The first time Santorum burns down a building while ululating about Jesus, I promise you I will condemn it.
GeG,
"Therefore I can't wait until the entire conservative movement tells Sick Rantorum to shut the fuck up and keep his religious zealotry and intolerance out of America!"
Only if you tell President Obama the same thing, Grung. See here:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/zekejmiller/obama-i-pushed-dodd-frank-and-health-care-reform
Mr. Obama says it is because of Christ that he pushed certain reforms. Hypocrisy, anyone? I thought so.
FT said: "I would only change one thing: "They can tear Karzai -- and the NEOCONS -- limb from limb, ... etc.""
Ah yes, the mostly methical neocons, who are really so few in number.
Silver: Gene's side kiils a lot more people than the killers of so-called "doctors".
"Get out of America you religious freaks!"
Why? We were here before you liberal America-haters. Tell me, how many of our Founding Fathers were as progressive and liberal as you and your ilk? Yet how many of our Founders had a 'religious background' that helped them create The US Constitution, giving all future Americans the right to religion?
Liberals want Christians to leave America, thus violating our freedoms to be Christians. Funny, that.
Hello kettle? This is pot. You're black.
SF,
The first time anyone espousing Jesus bombs a building, crashes a plane into one, or assembles illegally and rapes innocent women, I will be right there beside you.
SF and twoguys....exactly right. Haven't heard Jesus propose hurting anybody in YEARS :-)
I saw a guy on the news this morning talking about a Mass. case where a family's suing to get UNDER GOD out of the pledge, that it's not fair for their child to say that. Of course, the experts counter with "Then tell your child not to include UNDER GOD, or don't say the pledge", but they have to ruin it for EVERYONE (and the country, if you believe this country was built with the hand of GOd, which I do on my less doubtful days :-)"
Why I bring that up is the new euphemism for ATHEISTS, apparently is SECULAR AMERICANS. That cracked me up. He never said ATHEIST, just SECULAR AMERICANS. Of course, SECULAR can also mean NOT OVERLY RELIGIOUS, but ... sort of like "ABORTION" COULD mean THE RIGHT OF A WOMAN TO CONTROL HER BODY :-)
SF, more to the point of your post: WE NEED TO LEAVE YESTERDAY. I still believe the people there want us to stay and make them a peaceful, productive country but they don't seem to be educated enough to be able to handle their evil leadership, so..........off we go? Hopefully. I wonder how Obama will play this; probably we'll get out of Afghanistan shortly before the election. slam dunk.
ANother great thing I heard this morning, by the way, was Steve Forbes discussing if the Republicans are using the high price at the pumps for political gain. His comeback, which is absolutely TOTALLY RIGHT, was "..and if the prices were going down, Obama'd be using that politically, too" another slam dunk.
Z: They are a tribal people, worried more about what's out their window than lofty western ideals. We don't belong there.
I love Steve Forbes, and was prepared to vote for him for president. He makes too much sense to be a politician.
@Gene
Serious question. What is it about religion that sets you off foaming at the mouth in paroxysms of rage?
Are you so insecure in your own beliefs that you can't bear hearing anything in any way contradictory?
viburnum
What if we started bombing their villages and promised to stop if they put all their Qurans on a bonfire?
What is it about religion that sets progressives off?
Nothing. My own faith is rooted in the social gospel that is roundly rejected by the fringe right but that hardly dissuades me.
What we do object to are Calvinist ass hats who wish to legislate their morality and can't deal with secular society.
It's a constant chore keeping these primitives under control whether here or in Afghanistan.
Ducky,
Your 'social gospel' is a lie. Mankind has never been able to solve their problems. Your social gospel is designed to create and foment victimhood, racism, death, suspicion, and dependency.
Congrats. You have now cemented your belief in Oprah Jesus.
This is why you are so weak and deluded. Your spirit is being subjected to being a victim, and any strength you may have had has been reduced to sniveling and posturing.
King Contrarian you are, Ducky. Your confessed 'religious beliefs' prove this.
I almost feel sorry for you.
No, it's closer to Dorothy Day(look her up, Dumbo).
Hey Beamish, you have any idea if twoguys2012 is Farmer's latest manifestation.
I seem to be the apple of his eye and even got featured on his new blog.
I doubt it, Ducky. If "TwoGuys" appoints himself your "divine nemesis" and begins berating you across the blogosphere with sock puppets for months in an effort to remove all doubt he's an imbecile, you may have a case.

I still can't bridge the gap between identifying Obama's compounded ineptitude and failures in Afghanistan and concluding Ron Paul is correct that we shouldn't be there anyway, that there's absolutely no way actual American leadership would have resulted in a better outcome.
We could have done the war in Afghanistan right, and were, until Obama became commander of it.
Ron Paul is wrong. It wasn't hopeless until Obama made it so.
All theologies are "phony" and are ruminations on how many angels can dance on the heads of molested boys. (any anger over that Silverfiddle or is that just a matter of religious liberty)
religion is evil, it's slavery, it's fantasy and ignorance gilded and masked as some sort of higher truth. Dreams, wishing and stupidity.
But, the problem is Christopher Hitchens and I will not be able to celebrate after death because there is no after.
Ron Paul is wrong. It wasn't hopeless until Obama made it so.

I'm the Catholic her, grunge but yes, the church has done irreparable damage to it's claim to moral leadership.
"but the American military had the hubris to think it could install one."
No, Ducky, your progressive state had the hubris to think they could install one. The military had nothing to do with it outside of following orders.
We haven't run a war since Korea. Big Strategy, that's run out of the White House, has been for a long time.
How do you think the civil war would have went if old Abe was sitting back in Washington saying "You know Tecumseh, this burning Atlanta bit just doesn't work for us, we need to win their hearts and minds".
ROFLMAO
Cheers!
Gene: All theologies are "phony"
If that's what you believe why should the beliefs of others arouse anything more than bemused indifference?
As for "Dreams, wishing and stupidity." leading to evil and slavery see Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, etc

Ducky,
Oh, how sweet...you actually read my blog.
I'm hardly a nemesis, as to be one with me you need to be my equal and you, princess, are hardly my equal.
Am I Farmer? Hm. Only Jesus knows this answer, and since you and He don't really talk, I have no fear of Him ratting me out.
I will post your drivel freely and with extreme prejudice because I want others to see the mentality of the left as driven by you. You're welcome, since I know you desire the exposure.
Hugs and kisses!
Believe me twoguys, everyone that hubs off of z's fringe right central knows my opinions.
The majority of them are apparently from very sheltered environments where they don't get much more than Glenn Beck for news.
We haven't run a war since Korea.
-----
Not exactly, General Westmoreland, the lying puke, was instrumental in keeping the Vietnam exercise in play.
Now Chucklenuts did get resistance on the Iraq fiasco so he just fished around till he found Tommy ranks to run the show (a jive nothing from Texas, not by coincidence). He fronted the mess till he begged out when they offered him plenty of dough to go play the ponies for the rest of his life.
Now surely the prez gets military advice on these little escapades. It doesn't seem that they told him trying to effect major change in a country where we don't know the language, religion, culture or anything else might be foolhardy.
Oh come on Beamish, Chuck Norris couldn't have accomplished that insane mission.
Really? The Afghan war effort under Bush didn't have the Taliban out of Afghanistan and hemmed up in Pakistan's NWFP and the border of Baluchistan province in Iran?
The Afghan war effort under Bush didn't have logistical / air basing in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan?
This was the strategy Obama threw out. These were the allies SecState Hillary clinton bungled away letting Russia "reset" to owning and occupying Georgia.
This is left-wing Obama's clusterfuck. Own it, eat it.
Ducky,
Oh, Ducky...you just don't get it.
"Believe me twoguys, everyone that hubs off of z's fringe right central knows my opinions.
The majority of them are apparently from very sheltered environments where they don't get much more than Glenn Beck for news."
Which burns your leftist butt because in his day, the reruns (reruns!) of Beck's show on FOX smoked the 8 PM Prime Time show on MSNBC, your bastion of news. Ouch.
Truth hurts, Ducky. Your liberal media is limp and flaccid compared to Conservative news. We are the majority, after all.
In the past 10 years we have learned a very ugly lesson: we cannot help Muslims in Muslim countries. They are enslaved by their own holy book, and there is no way to make things better for them without them leaving the country and Islam.
So many have sacrificed so much. I want out now, do you. None of us can do a thing about the blackness of their lives. They have to do it themselves.
Oh God, this "apology" hard-on for the Right is suuuuuuch a bullshit critique. Argue something with substance for a change. No one is "bowing and scraping." That's a lie. That's just bullshit.
No one other than you cons think it's even true at all.
Obama has pulled the pulled the modern chain of our foreign entanglements the same way every single other president has since Roosevelt.
Obama has been quite aggressive and sometimes quite arrogant, something you cons would adore were it not for the fact Obama happens to be a "Democrat," and all the other childish, pointless, bullshit idioms you imagine of him - like "Apologizer."
For Christs sake, get out the sand box and get on the real, grown-up field. Concern yourselves with real, true things, actual issues.
JMJ
twoguys2012 = Fredd?
Certain shallow enough.
As if Westmoreland wasn't subservient to all of McNamara's machinations from the Cabinet.
And yes, the President gets military advice... as well as advice from State, Agrigulture, Commerce, and numerous other agencies all with a vested budget interest.
Who do you think Obama is listening to? His brilliant Spy Guy with two years of military experience as an Army Lieutenant? The guy's a career bureacrat. Or perhaps his national security advisor, the lobbyist, who has absolutely no military experience. Who according to Bob Woodward formulates administration Afghanistan policy having spent a grand total of 6 hours in country.
Wow...way to field the A-Team
The POINT we need to take away from the dismal failure of the "War on Terror" -- our foolish attempt to change the basically vile character of the Middle East by a ha;f-hearted, half-assed show of farce -- is this:
WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE ENGAGED IN THESE MILITARY ACTIONS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Ron Paul -- who only echoes the sentiments of GEORGE WASHINGTON for God's sake -- is right about our foolish foreign policy. It has been an unmitigated DISASTER.
Of course, who the hell is George Washington that we should pay any attention to him? He's a dead white slave owner, a vicious exploiter of African Negroes, a selfish, cold-hearted land grabber who married a wealthy widow for her money, and then left her for EIGHT YEARS while he indulged his adolescent passion for rebelliousness and legalized killing.
He was also a hypocrite who thought religion was a good way to control the common people, and who attended church sporadically and then only for "show."
Naturally anybody who professes to admire and respect the opinions of GEORGE WASHINGTON (UGH!) must be a thoroughly reprehensible scoundrel, himself, right?
Why the very city that bears that creepy white bastard's name is the positive EMBLEM of CORRUPTION, isn't it?
Who the hell needs GEORGE WASHINGTON?
If there were any decency in this benighted land of ours, that fatuous old fraud ought to be taken off the dollar bill and replaced with CHE GUEVARA.
Now THERE was a MAN!
Hang Ron Paul in effigy, then BURN HIM -- the dirty, lying, no-good traitor.
~ FreeThinke
George had an ocean to hide behind, the crossing of which took months not hours.
While I don't disagree that it's long past time to leave, we did have to go there. The problem is we went with the wrong purpose. There is nothing we can do to change the hearts and minds of these people and it's foolish to try. Our response to the Taliban hosting our enemies and refusing to give them up should have been a clear, openly stated ultimatum followed, if denied, by such utter destruction as to make a repeat of their actions inconceivable.
When the next would be terrorist has his throat cut by his own friends for suggesting an attack on America we'll be safe, not 'til then.

FT,
No intellectually honest, respectful, and productive discussion of Ron Paul's views can ever take place if all parties involved are unwilling to agree on the obvious fact that the man is a blithering idiot.
George Washington? The guy who led a disasterous invasion of Canada during the American Revolution? You mean the first President to crush a citizen's tax protest with a show of military force?
Ron Paul's embrace of George Washington involves premises the two do not share. Same with Ron Paul's embrace of other Founding Fathers. Paul would have opposed Thomas Jefferson's Barbary Wars, citing that we should not interfere with Islamic rights to control the Mediterranean Sea and enslave Americans they capture. Obviously, Americans would not have been captured by Barbary pirates if they stayed home. James Madison created the central banking system that Ron Paul rants about so much. James Monroe, the dirty neocon, mandated a foreign policy of American intervention anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, as if half the planet belonged to America.
Let's be realistic. Ron Paul is a blithering idiot. His pronouncements should be taken for what they are - symptoms of mental illness and historical illiteracy - rather than sound policy.
[let's not rehash Ron Paul's racism, anti-Semitism, and financial ties to the Iranian government]
Apologizing only makes these savages think they're right. I don't even understand why these scumbags are given korans, if one of us were taken, we wouldn't be given any bibles. We are too kind to these savages.

I share your fondest hopes and dreams, SilverFiddle. Believe me I do.

At least he didn't propose colonizing the moon...
At least Newt Gingrich wouldn't put NASA or any other federal bureaucracy in charge of doing so. He thinks we should get there this century, after all.
I wasn't flaming FT, but rather Ron Paul. I don't deify the Founding Fathers, but I will point out contrasts between their history and the mythologies employed by those who absurdly claim to be their ideological heirs (like Ron Paul)
I will also point out who Ron Paul is an actual ideological heir to (John T. Flynn, Gerald Nye, Father Coughlin...)
If there's evidence Ron Paul is not a blithering idiot, it's one of America's best kept secrets.
